I found a combination of packages on cygwin which are a working compromise
between what is needed for development work (both sets of GCC compilers) and
not going overboard on the window managers.
I have this as a 400MB zip file and have used it on a dozen machines. If anyone
wants this I can use an upload service to get it to you if you send me an email
request.

Hi Ian,
I never satisfactorily diagnosed the problem. In the end, I reinstalled
every package I could find that pertained to the x-windows system, or
contained the word 'font', and the problem disappeared. My guess is that
cygwin's package manager isn't aware of a key dependency in one of the
new packages.

Alex,
How did you solve this problem? I've just updated a Cygwin installation
and am experiencing the same problem.

I'm struggling with a new-to-me configuration error on a recent cygwin
installation: X11-compiled ESP-r binaries all report "display
127.0.0.1:0.0 doesn't know font 6x12". I have the following flavours of
6x12 installed in /usr/share/fonts:
6x12-ISO8859-1.pcf.gz
6x12-ISO8859-10.pcf.gz
6x12-ISO8859-13.pcf.gz
6x12-ISO8859-14.pcf.gz
6x12-ISO8859-15.pcf.gz
6x12-ISO8859-16.pcf.gz
6x12-ISO8859-2.pcf.gz
6x12-ISO8859-3.pcf.gz
6x12-ISO8859-4.pcf.gz
6x12-ISO8859-5.pcf.gz
6x12-ISO8859-7.pcf.gz
6x12-ISO8859-8.pcf.gz
6x12-ISO8859-9.pcf.gz
6x12-KOI8-R.pcf.gz
6x12.pcf.gz
I've tried the font-configuration advice contained in the readme file
(namely "export EFONT_0=6x12"), without success. Can anybody shed some
light on my problem?
Thanks!
