[esp-r] Re: Outdated zone-files and missing constructions

I attach a link to current documentation about ESP-r. There is a section about
the materials and construction databases. There are also sections discussing
how to attribute surfaces in terms of their constructions.

What version of ESP-r are you using and on what kind of computer and operating system?

The zone operations file has evolved over time and when older files are detected
you get the option to save the file to newer versions (which offer more space for
documentation and allow you to name the casual gain types if you want). Current
versions of ESP-r do not exhibit the warning on 2nd start.

The materials and constructions databases hold data that is used to create the
zone construction files. Zone construction files are designed so that the simulator
can quickly access the information it needs without having to re-read the databases
multiple times.

Materials and constructions databases that are found in the
databases folder of the ESP-r distribution include items used by many models.
Some models have custom materials and/or constructions and they tend
to reference materials or construction databases located in the model dbs
folder.

Surfaces have attributes of construction name. These are set in the
surface attributes menus of the zone geometry. ESP-r checks to see if
a matching name is found in the currently-loaded database when it attempts
to create a zone construction file and if it does not find it it brings up a list
of available constructions to select from.

So your model has surfaces with attributes of construction which are not
found in the current constructions database. Are these constructions that
you defined? Perhaps you need to use a different construction database?

Please tell us more about your model.

Subject: [esp-r] Outdated zone-files and missing constructions

Hi,

I have two questions, one being about a warning I would like to understand, the other a problem I need to somehow solve:

1) When loading my model in the project manager, I get a warning about an out-of-date format for a zone operation file. I Choose to update it, but the warning appears again with the next start of esp-r.

2) After updating, I am asked wether I also want to refresh the zone construction files from common materials and construction attributes. If I select yes, I end in a lot of messages about constructions which were not found in the mlc db (thus resetting to UNKNOWN is proposed). The construction is indeed not in the mlc, however, I see these constructions in the .con file. I first experienced this after (shame on me) playing around with some complex fenestration constructions, I had better though about doing this with a copy of my model. Obviously I do not have a clear understanding of the role of the two files - is the .con an alternative to the .db for keeping constructions, or does it just reference the definitions in the .db? I have a file .constrdb in my model directory, however I cannot select it from project managar (which allows me to choose only from ../).

Any help is strongly appreciated - more to understand what is in the files than to avoid re-defining the few constructions.

Cheers, Lars.
