[myplace-announce] Message from Dr O'Halloran regarding recent Myplace service outages

Dear Colleagues,

We are very pleased to report that Myplace had been stable since last Tuesday.

The issues that led to four short outages since 21 January have been resolved. Following intensive investigation of the software and hardware in SEES and ISD an issue within the core Moodle script was identified and a fix was applied on the morning of Tuesday 28 January. Myplace has been running without incident since then.



While MyPlace normally has a high degree of resilience (with availability generally in excess of 99%), we are only too aware that any period of disruption is very frustrating to users and apologise for any inconvenience that has been caused. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and update you regularly.



A lessons learned review is already underway and together with colleagues in ISD we are revisiting our operating procedures for MyPlace to ensure unexpected problems like this result in minimum disruption to students and staff. The review includes



*         Service availability, support and backup arrangements, including scheduling of upgrades

  *   If investment in software/hardware and/or staff, would improve resilience/service availability
  *   Publishing service availability standards and reporting on these on the site as a key performance indicator
