I have used Salome-Meca for an FEA project. I have used esp-r for a
different project.
Salome-Meca integrates open source Salome as a graphical preprocessor, and
open source Code Aster as the FEA engine.
Code Aster is unique in that it uses python to call the different FEA
modules. What it also allows is the use of open source Code Saturne for a
CFD analysis, or it can call both Code Aster and Code Saturne modules for a
coupled FEA/CFD analysis.
Once I learned this, I thought that if esp-r can be called by the python
script, that would be a really neat and powerful addition to be able to
answer questions that otherwise would be hard. For instance, the Canadians
developed empirical equations for basement simulation, called BaseSimp,
using FEA. But if you have a geometry that is not covered by these
empirical equations, being able to use FEA coupled with esp-r for your
basement simulation and envelop simulation would be a real asset.
It sounds like your simulation is similar.
I know OpenFoam is a more popular open CFD package, but not sure if it would
integrate in as nice a way that Code Aster and Code Saturn integrate using
the python script calls.

Thanks a lot for your quick reply.
I just found on the publication section of the ESP-r website two documents
1) Flowchart of
<http://www.esru.strath.ac.uk/Documents/mznuma_flowchart.pdf> the Structure
of the Main Controller of the Simulator bps, Routine mznuma.
2) Flowchart of the
<http://www.esru.strath.ac.uk/Documents/bps_flowchart.pdf> Structure of the
Simulator bps.
I want to external couple openFoam to calculate the convective heat transfer
coefficients of the external surfaces of the building.
Also if i have 2 building in the same simulations does ESP-r calculate the
reflective solar radiation from one building to the other?
Thanks in advance,

For a new person to the ESP-r code it is a challenge to know where to look
in the ~1 million
lines of code. I attach a link to a developers document which may give you
some clues. ESP-r
has evolved a bit since that document was created so some sections might be
slightly different
to the source code.
And there are several sections in the ESP-r Cookbook which relate to the
relationships between
the ESP-r executables and databases etc.
Perhaps you can tell us what topics you are looking for and we could give
you some
hints as to where to look in the code?

Hi, everyone
I am starting to read the code of Esp-r but i am lost.
Is somewhere a document with flow char of how the different compartments
of Esp-r work and interact ?
Thanks,
Kostas Gompakis
