Hi,
the best way to find the optical properties is to get them measured. As
the specific characteristic of translucent (non-transparent) materials
is the fact that they scatter the transmitted light, this means
measuring the Bidirectional Scatterd Distribution Function BSDF.
Peter Apian-Bennewitz has set up a collection of samples which he
measured using his goniophotometer, including model-fits to the material
models built into Radiance: http://www.pab.eu/gonio-photometer/demodata/bme/
This is a very illustrative approach to see the range of optical
properties which all fall under the term "translucent".
Cheers, Lars.
