The next Introduction to ESP-r workshops at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow (map link below) will be held on 11-12 February 2014, with an additional advanced day on 13th February covering topics related to plant systems modelling and simulation.

ESP-r is an integrated dynamic modelling tool for the simulation of the thermal performance of buildings and the assessment of their energy use.  The system is equipped to model heat, air, moisture and electrical power flows at user determined resolution.  It is available at no cost under an Open Source license.

ESP-r workshop sessions are designed to give you hands-on simulation experience as well to develop the underlying skills needed to translate design questions into models which deliver new information and insights.



The two-day workshop is intended for those new to ESP-r. For those who have recently joined the ESP-r development community, an introductory workshop is a very good way to explore the relationships between the various modules of the ESP-r suite and how they might be impacted by future software developments.  The three day workshop covers the same topics as the introductory workshop, plus additional topics on the third day, related to modelling and simulation of HVAC plant systems.

PROGRAMME
The following topics will be covered in the two day course:



·         A brief introduction to simulation and how it differs from simplified models

·         Introduction to the ESP-r interface, modules and layout of model folders

·         Browsing exemplar models and invoking simulations

·         Review of weather data

·         Construction materials and optical properties

·         Creation of a simple model

·         Occupancy and lighting patterns in rooms

·         Scheduled infiltration and ventilation in rooms

·         Setting up and running simulations, explanation of 'save levels'

·         Exploration of building performance

·         Exporting data from simulation for use with other tools

·         Checking models prior to simulation

·         Add shading obstructions to a model and calculate shading patterns

·         Ideal environmental controls

·         Fine-tune controls and test under-capacity systems

·         Increase model resolution and numerical resolution

·         Integrated Performance Views

·         Planning and creation of a new model

·         Creation and presentation of your model



The following additional topics will be covered in the three day course:



·         Overview of dynamic air flow assessments

·         Creation of a simple mass flow network

·         Control of flow within a mass flow network

·         Representing natural ventilation via a mass flow network

·         Overview of plant component based systems

·         Add a simple plant system to an existing model

·         Explore system performance and controls

The workshop will be fast-paced and interactive.  Delegates should find a wealth of productive techniques and tips from experts to do simulation quicker, cheaper, and better. The Workshop runs from 9h00 to 17h00 each day.

Participants are required to bring their own laptops with ESP-r installed.  Further details will be forwarded to registrants.

The cost of attending the two day workshop is £340, and the three day workshop £410.
