[esp-r] Re: Chilled water storage tank - water flow networks

I have been experimenting with water filled zones tied into a flow network to
represent a multi-zone heat accumulator as well as water filled solar collector.
I have also used water filled zones to represent components in a wet central
heating system and used a flow network to link these together.
The nice thing about this is that you can explicitly define the characteristics
of the lagging on the pipes and tanks, you get explicit radiation and convection
and the mass effects of the components are included.
Only tweaks required are to ensure that high heat transfers are set at the surfaces
associated with the water filled zones and setting a short building-side
timestep - say 1-2 minutes.
Most of the required facilities are in the most recent version of ESP-r
and some enhancements and exemplars should be going into
the repository in the near-rearm.

Dear Jim,
to answer your second question first, I am not aware of a phase change tank
in ESP-r. There are models for PCM materials in general (typically plaster
board embedded types) and there is a "surface evaporation" model available.
Both as "special materials".
If you set up a plant including water tanks you have a kind of "liquid
network". I have never superimposed an actual additional water flow network
(question: to what end?), but would expect it basically is done like an air
flow network. There is quite a bit of information on air flow networks in
"The Cookbook" (by Jon Hand), available at ESRU for download.

Achim and Marco, thank you for your responses.
Do you know if there is guide or information on how to setup a liquid flow
network in ESP-r?
Achim, at some point, I might considering modeling an Ice Storage tank,
which is based on phase change of water. As I understand this is not
something ESP-r can currently address right?

Dear list,
Is anyone familiar with efforts to model a chilled water storage tank system
in ESP-r and, ideally, its interaction with a chilled water system?
Thanks!

Dear Dimitrios,
have you tried using one of the available water storage tanks? I haven't
tried it, but I would suspect that the tank models for hot water can
basically be used with cold water, also. Or do you mean a phase change tank?
That would be something else, of course. I am not aware of such a model in
ESP-r

dear Dimitros,
there are a number of models in Esp-r, basically you could use the
stratified tank models, basically there are three of them, one without
internal exchangers, one with one exchanger and the last with two internal
heat exchangers. I extensively used the models for hot water, but they can
be used without problems with chilled water since the model deals with
thermal stratification.
