We indeed introduced some modifications in the code to establish the connection between ESP-r and BCVTB. A working version of our implementation with all functionality has been committed to our SVN developer's branch: 'ESP-r_BCVTB'.
This branch also contains two example models. One example demonstrates a heating controller in Matlab. The other example demonstrates shading control in BCVTB/Ptolemy II, with a possibility for extension to e.g. Radiance.

Recently, we also started working on an initial version of a manual/tutorial (note: it is mainly written for 'BCVTB audience'). Here is a link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9527295/ESPr_BCVTB_manual_v1.pdf
It is our intention to include a tutorial, together with the examples in one of the next releases of BCVTB.
Before that, we may need to improve robustness of the implementation. That's why we are looking for your feedback.

For more background information, I am also including a link to the slides of our presentation during the ESP-r community meeting at IBPSA bs2011: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9527295/ESPr_BCVTB_111114.pdf

Some remarks:
The coupling was only tested on 64-bit unix systems. 32-bit unix may require a different shared library. Please contact us if you need help.
Running the examples requires at least basic knowledge of both ESP-r and BCVTB.
Setting up new applications requires that you are (or become) familiar with ESP-r's source code.

Best regards,
Roel Loonen

At the IBPSA conference in Sydney in October of 2011 there were some presentations
from PhD students in Eindhoven (members of Jan Hensen's team). They have implemented
code for ESP-r that allows ESP-r to use the communication paths associated with BCVTB
and thus communicate with 3rd party software. I suggest that you see if they will
share some of their knowledge! Also, check out the papers in the IBPSA conference
for additional information.

If you figure out how it works then it would be great if there were some example
models and tutorials that could be shared within the community!

Regards, Jon Hand

Subject: [esp-r] esp-r - BCVTB

Hi,

I am seeking to get esp-r work with BCVTB (Building control virtual test bed - http://simulationresearch.lbl.gov/bcvtb). I am not able to find any documentation on coupling between esp-r and BCVTB. Has the link between esp-r and BCVTB has been established?
Any information on this would be much appreciated.

Regards,
-Vivek
