Dear Arianna
the "can't open display" may mean there is still a lock file from a crashed
session in the tmp folder. X will set a lock on the display when run - a
crash may leave this lock file and subsequent attempts to start X will fail.

I was thinking of reinstalling cygwin but that may create some issues.
