Actually the pre-compiled versions of esp-r are compiled to
different locations on different machine types as follows:

For Linux the self-extactor places the esp-r distribution
at /opt/esru because /opt is a standard location to place
optional software that a user adds (openoffice and staroffice
tend to be placed there by default).

For OSX there is typically nothing much in /usr so /opt/esru
is used.

For cygwin the self-extractor places esp-r in /usr/esru

For Native Windows the installer places esp-r in C:\Esru

It is a dream in the future to allow for spaces in the paths.
