If ESP-r works on Core 5 for you then there is no particular
argument for switching unless there is some other package
available on Ubuntu that you can't get in Core 5 or if your
hardware does not work well with Core 5.

ESP-r requires a set of compilers and libraries that is almost always
available what-ever Linux distribution you happen to use. Currently
the issue is availability of the older GNU compilers that ESP-r
needs. Ubuntu allows access to this and some other distros
can be more difficult.
