Several of the staff in ESRU have adopted Ubuntu Linux (7.04) as a
platform for ESP-r development and production work.  The
auto-detect of hardware tends to be good and the management
of software packages is robust. Once you know what you want
it tends to resolve dependencies (package A needs library X and Y).
No experience yet with Ubuntu 7.10.

We are compiling a list of "this is what you need" for Ubuntu
which we could make available at some point in the future.  Of
course it also helps to make friends with others who use a
particular computing platform to answer those questions that
are difficult via email.
